Pub

The pub used to be a focal point within the
English community. This aspect of the community is now coming to an end. It is giving way
to bars; theme pubs and modern gin palaces are now de rigeur. This is quite
peculiar, as gin palaces were all the rage in the 19th Century and early 20th Century.
History is going full circle. The pub where I took these photographs was in South London.
There are others that I have taken and they are in black and white and currently stored in
a shoe box that I need to unearth.
The good thing about pubs is that
they have people - this pub was particularly empty; I think that the above photo is quite
good evoking the atmosphere as exemplified by the spaces between the people.
Because pubs have people, you can capture moments
like this. This photograph has a sense of drama, but if my memory serves me right, the
chap in the photo was trying to attract the bartenders attention.
Photography also demands some
audacity, I managed to get myself behind the bar to take this shot. I think it's quite
good, two converations going at once. This exemplifies the point that what is going on in
the background gives depth to the entire photograph.
If this pub were full, I would not
have been able to take this shot, but look at the pints of stout lined up on the bar.
A great photograph!. This is what it is all about, capturing the
moment where someone enters into the spirit of things. There is something quite flamboyant
about the man on the left.
A couple of friends sharing a pint.
